Charlotte Fashion Incubator In Need Of Funding To Stay Open
November 20, 2023 Deirnesa Jefferson
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For many designers like Terrell Milton, Woven Fashion Incubator provides a string of hope.
“Woven is the place where I really flourished,” Milton said.
Milton has been a fashion designer for 9 years and said the space equipped with 30 industrial sewing machines is helping to meet a need for him and other underserved designers in Charlotte.
Culture Queen Tara Davis interviewed by WCCB to Save Woven.
“There are a lot of people out here that are like me who need an industrial sewing machine who can’t afford it, but can buy a membership and use these machines as much as they want. So that need is definitely there for designers,” Milton said.
Woven aims to support aspiring fashion designers and give them a space to work toward their dreams.
“We come here because it’s an environment conducive to success,” fashion designer Jamie Elykes said.
However, a shortage of funding could mean woven closing its doors for good.
“Its become home for a lot of us and to have that taken away is sad,” Elykes said.
Tara Davis, founder of Woven said the organization is trying to raise $50,000 to find a new space to call home.
The money would help provide equipment, studios and a space for aspiring designers to reach their full potential.
“Whether they’re a beginner or seasoned, they need a space. They need to network. They need community. They need all these things to make sure that they thrive in this industry,” Davis said.
